Application Scenario

As the core load-bearing component in total hip arthroplasty (THA), the femoral stem is implanted into the femoral medullary cavity to reconstruct hip joint function. It bears long-term cyclic human load and requires stable osseointegration, precise fitting, and high wear resistance. It is widely used in primary hip replacement, revision surgery, and custom anatomical implant solutions for hospitals and orthopedic device brands worldwide.

1. Slender weak-rigid structure & severe machining deformation

Key Process Difficulties & Our Solutions

The femoral stem is widely recognized as one of the most challenging components in orthopedic implant machining, due to its slender, weak-rigid structure, large deformation tendency, and complex multi-region process requirements. Based on years of in-depth production experience, we have formed a complete set of stable solutions to solve core pain points:

Long slender shape and low structural rigidity lead to obvious cutting vibration and bending deformation during machining, making it difficult to guarantee dimensional consistency.

→ We adopt custom fixtures, multi-stage stress relieving, low-force cutting parameters and layered machining strategies to effectively control deformation within 0.002mm, ensuring stability from prototype to mass production.

2. Long-stroke free-form contour precision control

Bionic anatomical surfaces require high precision over a long effective length, which brings large cumulative error and difficult detection.

→ With 5-axis linkage CNC and in-process CMM detection, we achieve full-stroke contour accuracy of ±0.003mm, perfectly restoring design fit and improving initial stability after implantation.

3. Ultra-precise Morse taper matching risk

Taper fit directly affects implant stability; slight tolerance deviation can cause loosening or abnormal wear.

→ We implement tight tolerance control of ±0.002mm and 100% taper matching inspection for each part, ensuring zero clearance fit and long-term service reliability.

4. Multi-region surface treatment complexity

A single part needs polished surface, porous bone ingrowth surface and transition surface at the same time. Process switching, masking protection and cross-contamination control are highly difficult.

→ We establish standardized partition processing and masking processes to realize stable and consistent surface quality in different regions, meeting clinical requirements of osseointegration and wear reduction.

Deformation, surface quality and dimensional fluctuation are common pain points for high-volume production of femoral stems.
